Blue Ridge Mountains and Wild Mushrooms

Camping is no friend of mine, but I was working on a project that involved my having a closer relationship with nature. So I was going to live outside for a few days and hopefully be richer for the experience. While camping in the beautiful Blue Ridge mountains of South Carolina late one night I awoke to the sweetest music. The pleasant sounds seemed to be playing on a tiny phonograph. Well, just like everyone else, it usually takes me a good ten to fifteen minutes to wake up from a good sleep. I believed I was alone out there and, was still a little drowsy; but I decided that I just had to know what was happening outside. I slowly slipped outside my tent to investigate. At first look I couldn't see anything but the intense glow of the full moon. So I was inclined to follow the sounds of a beautiful relaxing song. Soon I came upon a low flickering glow of light penetrating through a heavy and thick cluster of wild mushrooms. I couldn't look away as my eyes began to focus on the glow; it appeared to be about one sq.ft. in size. I squatted there for a moment; and found the music strangely relaxing. It seemed to pull me into the movement of the glow calling for me to invite sleep again. And then I thought, "O.K.! Great. This is where lightening bugs go. Do I have a container to catch some of them?" Never thinking that the only bugs I've ever heard making any kind of music were crickets in the woods surrounding my condo. I began to stand and in that quick second just before rising, my eyes caught a flicker of something rising up from the wildly glowing cluster. Halfway up I just froze. I was attempting to focus my eyes, half excited and half terrified. The step cousins of curiosity could not make clear the activity that I was about to witness.
